Deception Division: WWII’s Ghost Army
During World War II, the U.S. deployed a top-secret unit known as the Ghost Army, a group of 1,100 artists, sound engineers, and set designers tasked with one mission: to deceive the enemy using nothing but creativity.
Armed with inflatable tanks, fake radio transmissions, and pre-recorded battlefield sounds blasted through massive speakers, this unit tricked German forces into thinking Allied troops were in places they weren’t. They could simulate entire divisions overnight convincing the enemy that tens of thousands of soldiers were massing, when in reality, it was just a handful of actors and some air-filled tanks.
Their deception is credited with saving thousands of lives and shortening the war. And Their existence remained classified for over 40 YEARS.
